Highlights and how to get the most out of mentoring with The Kids Network #NationalMentoringDay
As we wrap up our 3-part 10-question reflection series in celebration of National Mentoring Day’s 10-year anniversary, we turn our focus to the moments that make mentoring truly special – or what we like to
call #MentorMagic.
There’s nothing quite like knowing you’ve made a difference in another person’s life, especially when you’re making an impact to a #LittleLondoner in their most important stages of growing up. As a mentor, you are helping them learn resilience, grow self confidence and develop skills to go on to believe in themselves and their future.
In this final part of our series, our mentors share their most rewarding experiences and offer advice to those who are thinking about becoming a mentor themselves.
What has been the most rewarding moment of your mentoring journey?
Sarah: “Let’s just say my mentee is my pal! I knew I’d win them over with my loudness and bad jokes, and it worked!”
Shaaista: “When my mentee told me I‘get her’ and that she feels like she can tell me anything—that’s when I knew I was making a real difference.”
Sofia: “Knowing that I’m a safe space for my mentee to explore his thoughts. Seeing him come out of his shell has been incredibly rewarding.”
What advice would you give to a new mentor?
Sarah: “Have fun! Remember what you were like at that age, and try to see the world through their eyes. It’s a journey worth every moment.”
Shaaista: “Always have two activities ready so your mentee can choose. It’s important to let them take the lead on what they’d like to do.”
Sofia: “Be on time, keep promises, and just show up. Consistency is key to building trust.”
What role do you think mentorship plays in building confidence in young people?
Sarah: “It’s a privileged role. Your words and actions can really impact how they see the world.”
Shaaista: “Mentorship gives young people the freedom to be themselves in a supportive space, which really helps boost their confidence.”
Sofia: “Mentoring creates a fun, supportive environment outside of school where children can explore and grow in ways they might not otherwise be able to.”
How do you plan to continue your mentoring journey?
Sarah: “Through TKN alumni and ongoing support, I’ll definitely stay involved through time and charitable
giving.”
Shaaista: “I’d love to continue mentoring for many years to come—it’s one of the best parts of my week!”
Sofia:”Even if I don’t mentor next year, I want to stay involved with the charity and support in any way I can.”
Mentoring is full of rewarding moments, and the memories created along the way can last a lifetime.
