“Be yourself and let your mentee do the same”

We have been really enjoying putting the spotlight on our mentors past and present to celebrate #NationalMentoringDay over the past week, we hope you also celebrated.

The Kids Network spoke to alumni mentor Cher about her journey that was filled with #MentorMagic.

In the beginning, she witnessed her mentee transition from primary to secondary school, gaining confidence and independence with the support of their mentoring sessions.

“A standout memory from the middle of our journey was seeing my #LittleLondoner’s joy at Disney on Ice around Christmas. By the end, we had created personalised goodbye t-shirts, reflecting on our journey together,” she said. “But one unforgettable #MentorMagic moment for me was the “River of Dreams” activity, where my mentee showed hope and a beautiful vision for her future.

Cher’s advice to new mentors is simple: “Be yourself and let your mentee do the same, embracing the experience”.

The impact on Cher was profound—mentoring wasn’t just about giving back; she grew alongside her mentee, gaining confidence too. The biggest reward was seeing her mentee’s happiness while exploring new places in London and having a mentor to guide her through, and that they were looking forward to their future.

Looking back, Cher told us about how #TeamTKN were a key part of the journey too. “The check-ins, emails, and events were amazing, and the whole team was incredibly supportive.

Thank you Cher for sharing your experience with us!
